SEEC - NDSoR: Accelerating Skilled Disciplinary Writers (2023-2024) [Multi-Day Series]

SEEC - NDSoR: Accelerating Skilled Disciplinary Writers (2023-2024) [Multi-Day Series]

Wednesday, September 27, 2023 (3:30 PM - 4:30 PM) (CDT)

Description

DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide participants with a framework for writing instruction that can be used in all grade levels and content areas—including elementary, and middle school/high school content area educators. Because the approach taught in this course relies on mentor texts and explicit instruction, this will contrast with a writer’s workshop and process model.  This course will combine online, synchronous meetings, face-to-face experiences, and asynchronous practice submissions. Prior to each session, there will be required reading from the provided text.

Overarching Objective:

Educators will be able to identify the types of writing they expect from their learners and the characteristics of that writing, and well as how to explicitly teach the characteristics they expect.

NOTE: In-between each face-to-face day, participants will have independent practice time to apply and reflect on their learning from the previous session.

Synchronous Virtual Zoom 1 Objective:

  1. Educators will contrast the genre approach with process writing approach or writer's workshop.

Face-to-Face Day 1 Objectives:

  1. Identify organizational structures and jobs of paragraphs in Explanations and Information Reports.
  2. Identify key language features common to explanations and information reports.
  3. Describe the stages of the Teaching and Learning Cycle.

Face-to-Face Day 2 Objectives:

  1. Identify organizational structure and jobs of paragraphs in different kinds of arguments
  2. Identify key language features common to arguments in science, ELA, social studies, and math.
  3. Apply the teaching and learning cycle for arguments

Face-Face-Day 3: Objectives:

  1. Identify organizational structure and jobs of paragraphs in narratives and recounts
  2. Identify key language features common to narratives and recounts.
