This course is designed for all educators to understand some of the problems with current literacy instruction and learn about solutions. Relying on research from the science of reading, this course will build educators’ background knowledge on how our brains best learn to read and the components that go into effective instruction. Pairing the investigative journalism of Emily Hanford around issues of literacy instruction with the solutions in Know Better, Do Better, this book study will help educators build a solid understanding of foundational reading skills and resources and activities to help build the skills in all students with practices based on the science of how the brain learns to read.
Objectives: By the completion of this course, participants will:
DELIVERY:
Participants will be required to meet VIRTUALLY every other Monday for 1-hour discussions on the content for a total of 5 sessions. Participants will also be asked to complete reading/listening activities for approximately 1 hour each week throughout the 10-week course.
AUDIENCES: Elementary Teachers; ELA/Literacy Teachers; Special Education Teachers; Title I Teachers; Instructional Coaches

CREDIT: 1 graduate credit is available through VCSU. Participants must attend all virtual sessions and completed all required homework activities in between virtual meetings.

NOTE: Participants will need to purchase the book on their own prior to beginning the course.
