NOTE: Please complete the first 2 online courses PRIOR to the first online check-in in October (approximately 1 hour per module).
In collaborating with the Department of Public Instruction, SEEC and NESC are excited to introduce our latest professional learning opportunity - Master Teacher Paraeducator Online Training!
The training is designed to support North Dakota schools' paraeducators and tutors in the acquisition and application of instructional practices deemed effective for increasing K-12 students' learning outcomes. We have partnered with The Master Teacher, a company that has developed an online training platform that includes 148 self-paced courses. Participants will have free access to all courses for one year.
Participants will complete designated courses prior to engaging in 2 scheduled synchronous, virtual connections in which they will collaborate with others in the field to:
- Synthesize their learning
- Ask questions
- Provide insight into their work
- Practice their new learning and skills in a safe and inclusive setting
Required Courses from The Master Teacher Paraeducator Online Training:
Module 1: Supporting Instruction: Reading (Course 118)
- Review the meaning and activity of reading
- Learn questions to ask regarding the school district’s reading program
- Gain knowledge of the pieces that make up a balanced literacy program
- Understand the cues that readers can use to gain meaning from text
- Learn prompts for encouraging students to use reading strategies to gain meaning from text
- Recognize the stages of reading development
- Learn tips for making appropriate accommodations and modifications to reading instruction and activities
Module 2: Supporting Instruction: Writing (Course 119)
- Learn basic points about the writing process
- Understand the different ways of helping students with writing
- Learn simple rules for supporting writing instruction with students
- Gain tips for making appropriate accommodations and modifications to writing instruction and activities
Module 3: Supporting Instruction: Mathematics (Course 120)
- Gain a basic overview of the fundamentals of mathematics instruction
- Learn strategies for working with students in mathematics and, in particular, problem-solving
- Understand the role that educators play in building positive student attitudes toward mathematics
- Learn some tips for making appropriate accommodations and modifications to mathematics
- instruction and activities
- Learn techniques for providing feedback to students on right versus wrong answers
DELIVERY: This multi-day training will be delivered VIRTUALLY. Participants will complete 3 online courses asynchronously AND participate in 2 synchronous online check-ins throughout the semester (one after Modules 1 and 2; one after Module 3).

CREDIT: This training will count toward 4 hours of Cafeteria Credit (for those eligible for Graduate Credit).
