SEEC - Enacting Equity Through the Genre Approach: WIDA ELD Standards, 2020 Edition Training (5/16/2022) [Single Day Event]

Monday, May 16, 2022 (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM) (CDT)

Description

DESCRIPTION

Learn to recognize school genres and connect them to personal/work-life situations. PLUS get an overview of the WIDA 2020 standards.

AM: Understand how the standards are organized; the Big Ideas and the instructional shifts they facilitate; the standards components and their purposes in instructional design; and recognize genres in their own lives and those in content areas using Systemic Functional Linguistics.

PM: Unpack the Language Expectations, Language Functions and Features, and Annotated Mentor Texts and how they can be used in designing a unit of instruction. Participants will walk away with a mapped-out unit of instruction to apply their understanding of the standards components.

Participants will:

  • Examine the instructional and mindset shifts the Big Ideas facilitate and implications for programming and services of their English Learners.
  • Identify the main components of the standards and their purpose in instructional design (including an understanding of the Key Language Uses and how they are connected to the Language Expectations, Functions, and Features).
  • Unpack the standards from an instructional standpoint: which components should be used when in the instructional design (the funnel metaphor from the broadest level of language in the Language Expectations to the narrowest level of language in the Language Features, not the other way around).
  • Design a unit of instruction following the Funnel model.
